visual effects that stay live

madphase is a real-time compositing studio built around one editable stack. Work on a finished frame, author a timeline, or perform to live sound without rebuilding the composition.

working modes

still. video. live

These are three views of the same project, not three separate tools. The stack, sources, masks, and effects stay with you as the job moves from a single frame to an authored timeline or a real-time performance.

01 · compose one frame

Still mode

Build a finished image at a selected moment in the stack. Timeline playback and temporal history stay out of the way while every layer, mask, blend, transform, and effect remains live.

  • Start with images, text, generated sources, AI layers, or a chosen frame from footage — or generate the entire composition from nothing.
  • Reorder and group layers, build masks from effect stacks, and tune the canvas at an adjustable preview scale without baking any step in.
  • Export at full quality to PNG, JPEG, WebP, TIFF, BMP, TGA, or EXR.

02 · author the timeline

Video mode

Turn the same editable stack into a timed composition. The playhead resolves source frames, keyframes, audio drivers, and temporal history for every frame you preview and export.

  • Keyframe effect parameters plus layer visibility, opacity, and blend mode with hold, linear, or Bezier interpolation and loopable motion presets.
  • Trim, loop, transform, and offset footage; add trails, echoes, persistence, and other frame-history effects; scrub or step the timeline precisely.
  • Drive parameters from an audio file or video soundtrack, then export MP4, MOV, WebM, or GIF with frame-rate, codec, bitrate, and audio controls.

03 · perform in real time

Live mode

Use the Video timeline as a continuously looping performance clock while madphase samples fresh system audio or microphone input for every output tick.

  • Keep the same keyframes, footage timing, audio lane, and temporal effects as Video mode. Without an input, the authored loop still runs normally.
  • Map loudness, a named or custom frequency band, beats, onsets, or drum hits to any parameter. Live values take over while the signal is active, then return to the authored timeline.
  • Play and Pause control the timeline and attached input together. Present through a separate Canvas Output window, or record a live take to bake repeatable audio-driven motion.

keyframes

any parameter animates

Every number on every panel is a keyframe target. This one is live: real keyframes on a real parameter, and the picture is madphase output — the curve decides which frame you see. Press play, or scrub the timeline.

thresholdUpper 20%
00.00 ease in-out · loop 02.00

keyframe anything

Sort thresholds, warp power, grain, a mask's feather, a light's position — if you can set it, you can animate it. Easing curves and loop presets that actually loop.

audio drives anything

Audio-reactive isn't a per-effect feature — it's the animation system. Any parameter can follow level, a frequency band, beats, onsets, or drum hits. Use a file or video soundtrack in Video mode, then switch to fresh system audio or a microphone in Live.

the preview is the export

The timeline you scrub is the file you render — frame for frame, to stills, gif, mp4, mov, or webm.

audio + keyframes

the timeline stays visible

A real stack, real curves, and audio-driven motion in the same place as the image.

glitch

the deepest pixel sorter anywhere

Pathed pixel sorting along lines, circles, spirals, Perlin fields, sweeps, rain, and Kármán vortices — every path composes as an ordinary layer you can mask, keyframe, and stack. GPU-native.

signal

run your image through a mixing desk

Sonification reads pixels as audio and plays them through phasers, flangers, and compressors; FFT EQ sculpts the image spectrum with band gains. Treating pictures as signal is the house specialty — no other studio does it.

signal

the image as a carrier wave

Frequency modulation, scanline refraction, spectral tears and smears — broadcast-era signal physics applied to pixels, editable until export.

organic

grow patterns out of your picture

Reaction–diffusion seeded by your own pixels: spots, stripes, labyrinths, and coral that follow the structure of the source instead of sitting on top of it.

particle

particles that render like film

Deterministic GPU particle fields — sand, embers, magnetic filings, cymatic patterns driven by bass. Deterministic means the export is the preview, frame for frame, every time.

transform

relight flat pixels in 3d

3D augment builds height, normals, and material from the image itself, then lets you move the light. Impasto relief from a photograph, no modelling.

generative

or start from nothing at all

Pattern generators and expression-driven procedural shaders are sources like any other layer — a whole composition can be built without importing a single file.

the system

one stack under all of it

The instruments are the surface. These are the rules every effect obeys.

stack

Everything above composes as a layer — reorder, group, mask, and blend, nothing bakes in.

modes

Still for single frames, Video for authored timelines, and Live for real-time audio performance — one stack moves between all three.

keyframes

Any parameter animates: easing, loop presets, and a real timeline shared by stills, video, and generated layers.

audio

Level, frequency bands, beats, onsets, or drum hits drive any parameter — from a file, a video soundtrack, system audio, or a microphone.

masks

Every mask is itself an effect stack — grow a mask out of anything the studio can make.

ai

Image, video, edit, upscale, and outpaint — bring your own key, results land as ordinary layers.

export

Stills, gif, mp4, mov, webm — the preview is the export, frame for frame.
